There are other children’s war stories that also come alive here through collected objects — a portrait of Michael Morpugo’s War Horse, and a life-size model of Robert Westall’s Machine Gunners’ secret fortress — but Hepzibah’s green and white kitchen stands out for its palpable domesticity, the obvious civilian among military things. The characters definitely had potential to bring the story together, but it never seemed to come to light for me. When Wzr Gotobed dies, Albert is sure that Mr Evans has stolen her will so that he can turn Hepzibah and Mr Johnny out of his deceased sister’s house, despite there being plenty of evidence that Mrs Gotobed had made no will, although mental deterioration led her to believe bwden had made one.

He came across as rather spoilt at times, expecting to get things he wanted such as the “knife” etc however, he always seemed very grateful caarrie what he did receive and in many ways his hotheadedness was the main reason I found him quite irritating.

The Children’s War: Carrie’s War by Nina Bawden

Good, although I just read chapter one. Hepzibah is a witch and tells them the story of the cursed skull which is kept in the library. Nick on the other hand, rather did annoy me. But she is more than niina. While the men and women who had fought in those wars never spoke of them at home, we seized on books such as Carrie’s War and Goodnight Mister Tom, by Michelle Magorian.

Henry’s new human family has also had to adapt to a different way of life.

There were fantasy writers before Edith Nesbit but she is the one that brought the magical and the mundane baqden in a moment of nuclear fusion.
