I don’t want to take you from work. Obviously, you cannot expect the English dialogue to be idiomatically correct. It was an apartment block in downtown Cairo in The Yacoubian Building; in Chicago, it’s the campus of the University of Illinois Medical Centre, where the author studied dentistry in the Eighties.
Her story is told with special poignancy.

Particularly appealing about the novel is the aswayn with which Aswany addresses the issue of Egypt’s contemporary political corruption and decay; the name of the leader that’s at the rotting head of this administration, Hosni Mubarak, is never mentioned, but he is often and unmistakably referred to, and one of the central occurrences in the book is a state visit that takes him to Chicago.
He is both a great patriot and a great author. In Chicago Al Aswany has, understandably, returned to the same aoaa with a broad network of interconnected tales of loss and redemption, but this time the tone is much darker, less forgiving and more openly political.
Yet his new novel, Chicago: This is a shrewdly conceived novel: The soap-opera plot includes one doctor losing his daughter to drug addiction, but everywhere sex is one of the big problems including in that case, where, of course, it was the bohemian artist-boyfriend that introduced the lass to hard drugs. Again, the novel is interesting for its frank and guileless insights into Muslim culture, but it is not a very good novel. Nagbi a student who wants to start ak revolution to turn Egypt into a democracy will cause problems in his personal life.
