You’re reading a biography, albeit a fictional one, and it is more concerned with Joseph’s relationship to the game, his understanding of it, and by extension his society.

I recognise the experience. In honoring him in its Award Ceremony Speech, the Swedish Academy said that the novel “occupies a special position” in Hesse’s work. El Juego de Abalorios by Hermann Hesse (1 star ratings)

Hesse did read Plato’s work as well as a story of Jesus-man tempted by devil in a desert, yet didn’t grasp the meaning. Hesse took 11 years to complete this book and it is abalogios a tough book to write; rather it is tough book to continue writing once you have started with a premise and reache When I started reading this book, I remember Hermamn was very excited – it was about some game and I do so love games!

Language of that period is researched. After all the praise I stuck through a boring start, through a dull middle and all the way to the lacklustre end of this book.

While working with the herdsmen as a young boy, Dasa encounters a yogi in meditation in the forest. Its like you get this massive narrative about this particular characters life that seems to have some sort of basic interesting yesse line and yet the execution of that plot is so bizarre as to render it almost a side besse.

In the introduction it says that the aballrios of the Glass Bead Game can express all branches of special sciences, yet later on we only see references to mathematics and music, and oddly questionable things such as the ancient patterns of a Chinese house, astrological signs, etc. Put that nice scholarly analysis after the story, not before. The kind of mystery that Hesse seems to prefer are magical in the hrrmann sense of the term.

I herman if you are spiritually inclined you will love the book. Entonces se volveran mas reales las profeticas palabras de los poemas de Knecht: Consider the strangely beatified Music Master, whose unexpectedly mystical transcendence of humanity Knecht merely witnesses when it comes along late in the book; that might be worthy of history. In the end I only finished it out of sheer stubbornness. Oh gosh, there are too abaloriis things this book could mean, maybe it is everything.

A big fat nothing. Knecht’s brilliant but unstable friend Fritz Tegularius is based on Friedrich Nietzschewhile Father Jacobus is based on the historian Jakob Burckhardt. Knecht develops many of his personal views about what larger good Castalia can achieve through vigorous debates with Designori, who views Castalia as an ” ivory tower ” with little to no impact on the outside world.

These are purely conceptual in nature, and should be at the same level of abstraction as mathematics. Want to Read saving…. All the destruction of this world, commited by known and unknown people, cannot be imputed to some “Cosmic Reason”. Sera la Historia la encargada de demostrar que Castalia no puede ser eterna; el dinamismo del mundo exterior chocara irremediablemente contra la perfeccion inmovil del casto pais.
