The reason for the seemingly low rate is simply that the story didn’t resonate with me as others tend to do. Maria is particularly taken with her tower bedroom, its ceiling covered in moons and stars, its silvery furniture, its little tin of sugar biscuits …. Over and over, the emphasis on Maria having to learn to accept and embody feminine virtues and they are explicitly denoted as feminine There are some beautiful aspects of this story, especially the descriptions — nature, food, clothing — there’s a richness to them that is very appealing.

The little white horse and the tawny animal, galloping together along that forest glade, seemed in no hurry to arrive. I skipped to the last chapter, which was vomitously happy, as everyone finds their long-lost loves and gets married and have dozens quiver-fulls? Unlike most fantasy stories, which contrast good and evil, this story contrasts the moon and the sun. Maria has to right the wrongs of her ancestors so there is a bit of a morality tale at its heart. Rowling would have loved this book and may somewhere have also been inspired by it As she never mentions it explicitly anywhere, but we know how whiite from our favourite books and stories just seep into our writing.
