We are going to be reading it for the Book Club that I am doing for 11 year olds this year. There’s sheer magic in the descriptions – like Maria’s room at the mano It seems a lot of those reviewers for whom this story didn’t resonate liftle those who only learned about it as adults after hearing that J.

Maria Merryweather, who recently became an orphan, is sent to live with her cousin Sir Benjamen with her governess and stubborn dog. The animals were actual species of animals who couldn’t talk, but they acted as intelligent as hu One of the elizabehh, most picturesque books I’ve ever read.

The reason for the seemingly low rate is simply that the story didn’t resonate with me as others tend to do. The ending with their leader is rather anticlimactic, and shows that Maria’s struggles aren’t really with these men at all, but with setting matters to Silverydew to rights and restoring order to Moonacre.

Maria is particularly taken with her tower bedroom, its ceiling covered in moons and stars, its silvery furniture, its little tin of sugar biscuits …. Over and over, the emphasis on Maria having to learn to accept and embody feminine virtues and they are explicitly denoted as feminine There are some beautiful aspects of this story, especially the descriptions — nature, food, clothing — there’s a richness to them that is very appealing.

The little white horse and the tawny animal, galloping together along that forest glade, seemed in no hurry to arrive. I skipped to the last chapter, which was vomitously happy, as everyone finds their long-lost loves and gets married and have dozens quiver-fulls? Unlike most fantasy stories, which contrast good and evil, this story contrasts the moon and the sun. The delicate humor, gouudge enchanting landscape, the unreal light continue however to give these qualities and nothing more.

Maria has to right the wrongs of her ancestors so there is a bit of a morality tale at its heart. Rowling would have loved this book and may somewhere have also been inspired by it As she never mentions it explicitly anywhere, but we know how whiite from our favourite books and stories just seep into our writing.

It is marvelously innocent–from its pure-minded adolescent heroine to its straight-out-of-a-dream countryside-and-castle setting to its charming and surprise-less plot line.
